1. The Universal Journal Multi-Currency Paradigm

In legacy SAP ECC, General Ledger was limited to three currency types per company code (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Local Currency). In SAP S/4HANA, the Universal Journal (ACDOCA) fundamentally expands currency handling to support up to 10 currency dimensions simultaneously for every line item:

🪙 Standard vs. Freely Defined Currency Types in ACDOCA

Type 00 (Document Currency - WSL): The currency of the original commercial invoice or payment.

Type 10 (Company Code Currency - HSL): The primary legal entity currency for statutory reporting.

Type 30 (Group Currency - KSL): The corporate headquarters consolidation currency.

Types B1-B8 (Freely Defined Currencies - OSL/VSL): Configurable per ledger for specialized tracking, such as hard currency, index currency, or environmental carbon credit units.

2. Multi-GAAP Ledgers: Leading vs. Non-Leading Approaches

Global corporations must report according to both international standards (IFRS or US GAAP) and local statutory accounting principles (e.g. German HGB, French GAAP, Italian Civil Code). S/4HANA handles this through the Ledger Approach:

Attribute Leading Ledger (0L) Non-Leading Ledger (2L) Extension Ledger (E1)
Accounting Principle Group Standard (IFRS / US GAAP) Local Commercial Code / Statutory Valuation Adjustments / Simulation
Full Journal Copy Yes (100% of transactions) Yes (100% of transactions) No (Delta adjustment rows only)
Controlling Integration Direct integration with CO Valuation delta postings Zero impact on operational CO
HANA Storage Footprint 1x Base Storage 2x Base Storage ~0.05x Base Storage

3. Clean Core CDS Currency Conversion Push-Down

In ABAP Cloud, currency conversion must never be implemented as procedural loops using function module CONVERT_TO_LOCAL_CURRENCY. Instead, architects use the SQL push-down function currency_conversion directly within CDS View Entities:

@Semantics.amount.currencyCode: 'TargetCurrency' currency_conversion( amount => AmountInTransactionCurrency, source_currency => TransactionCurrency, target_currency => cast( 'USD' as abap.cuky( 5 ) ), exchange_rate_date => PostingDate, exchange_rate_type => 'M', error_handling => 'SET_TO_NULL' ) as ConvertedAmountUSD, cast( 'USD' as abap.cuky( 5 ) ) as TargetCurrency

4. Foreign Currency Valuation & Rounding Rules

At financial period-end, open items denominated in foreign currencies must be revalued. S/4HANA executes foreign currency valuation via transaction FAGL_FCV, writing unrealized exchange rate gain/loss line items directly to ACDOCA for each individual ledger. Clean core governance requires:
