Prior to SAP S/4HANA, financial transactions were fragmented across dozens of separate database tables: General Ledger (BKPF / BSEG / FAGLFLEXA), Controlling (COEP / COBK), Asset Accounting (ANEP / ANLC), and Material Ledger (MLIT). Reconciliations between FI and CO were an ongoing operational nightmare.
In SAP S/4HANA, table ACDOCA (Universal Journal Entry Line Items) harmonizes all financial data into a single columnar table with over 400 predefined dimensions. The classical tables are preserved as CDS Compatibility Views for read operations, but all new transactional records write directly to ACDOCA.
When business requirements demand custom financial dimensions (such as custom profit drivers, regulatory ESG flags, or project attributes), architects face two primary choices:
| Dimension | Coding Block (OXK1 / CI_COBL) | Custom Fields App (F1481 / In-App) |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Core Tier | Tier 2 (Classic Extension) | Tier 1 (ABAP Cloud / Key-User) |
| Cross-Module Reach | FI, CO, MM (Purchase Orders), SD | Configurable across business contexts |
| UI Exposure | Dynpro Subscreen SAPLKACB 0100 | Fiori Elements & Analytical Queries |
| Field Movement | Requires configuration in GB01 / GB02 | Automated across CDS view layers |
| Upgrade Safety | Requires dictionary regeneration | 100% upgrade-safe and cloud-native |
Extension ledgers are one of S/4HANA's most powerful architectural features. Instead of duplicating all journal entries across standard ledgers (e.g. Leading Ledger 0L and Non-Leading Statutory Ledger 2L), an Extension Ledger points to an underlying ledger and only stores delta postings.
Type U (Standard Extension Ledger): Stores manual adjustment postings. Read queries automatically combine underlying ledger rows with extension rows.
Type C (Line Items with Technical IDs): Used for automated valuation differences, such as IFRS 16 lease valuations and foreign currency revaluations.
Type P (Predictive Accounting): Captures incoming sales orders from SD and projects future commitments directly into the Universal Journal.
Classical S/4HANA implementations relied on transaction GGB1 for financial substitutions, which frequently executed raw non-released SQL or called unmanaged functional exits. In ABAP Cloud, clean core derivation is handled via the released BAdI BADI_FINS_ACDOC_SUBSTITUTION:
Because ACDOCA frequently stores billions of records in enterprise SAP landscapes, architects must follow strict design rules:
