ARCHITECTURAL BLUEPRINT #76

SAP BTP Private Link Service, Azure/AWS Direct Peering & Zero-Trust Connectivity Guide

Eliminate public internet exposure between SAP BTP and corporate cloud infrastructure. Architect secure, private network peering to Azure and AWS services using the SAP BTP Private Link Service.

1. The Security Mandate for Zero Public Ingress/Egress

In regulated industries (finance, healthcare, defense, manufacturing), corporate Infosec policies prohibit sensitive enterprise data—such as S/4HANA financial records, HR master data, and supply chain telemetry—from traversing public internet IP addresses.

Previously, connecting SAP BTP apps to corporate databases (e.g. Azure PostgreSQL or AWS RDS) required public endpoints guarded by IP whitelisting or complex IPSec VPN tunnels. SAP BTP Private Link Service replaces this by creating private endpoints directly inside the cloud provider's internal software-defined network.

2. Architecture: BTP Private Link vs Classic VPN

Traditional VPC Peering or VPN connections suffer from two major flaws:

In contrast, Private Link works over unidirectional endpoint proxying. Traffic flows exclusively from BTP to the specific target service (e.g. port 5432 on a single database) without exposing any other internal VPC resources.

3. The Connection Lifecycle & Approval Handshake

Establishing a Private Link connection involves an explicit security handshake:

  1. Creation: The BTP developer triggers cf create-service privatelink standard pls-name -c '{"resourceId": "..."}'.
  2. Pending Approval: The request surfaces in the Azure/AWS portal under Private Endpoint Connections with status Pending.
  3. Approval: The cloud network administrator approves the request.
  4. Established: The BTP service transitions to Established and injects private DNS entries into the application container.

4. Private DNS Resolution Inside BTP

Once bound, applications continue referencing the standard fully-qualified domain name (FQDN). BTP's internal DNS resolver automatically overrides the public resolution, routing TCP packets through the private endpoint network interface.
